The South Auditorium development in southwest Portland was an urban revitalization project. Sadly, this project with its Halprin gems is under used and inward facing.
In my analysis of this project, I proposed several approaches to revitalize this classic, modern project. According to Lawrence Halprin in 1981, “These places were for the first time designed to be used to be participatory NOT just to look at –they say COME IN not stay off.”
While keeping Halprin’s vision in mind, I developed the following objectives:
One of those objectives, that of opening the center out to the surrounding city could look somewhat like this:
Part of what was so fun about this project was limiting my color palette to something reminiscent of the era when this urban revitalization project was put in. Besides the color photos, I only used shades of orange and brown–and designed the sheets to be as minimal and clean as possible.
